The challenge in fighting cancer in PNG is that most cases present to health facilities too late for treatment to be effective. We are working to change this by screening for cancer to diagnose the disease early and providing links to effective treatment.
Many cancer cases go undiagnosed until it’s too late for effective treatment. Lack of awareness, fear, and limited diagnostic services contribute to this problem. Mustard Seed Global’s Bush Angels paramedic units specialize in early cancer diagnosis, focusing on prevalent and treatable cancers. Equipped with state-of-the-art tools and trained in best practices from around the world, our teams play a vital role in identifying and treating cancers in their early stages.

For example, our paramedics utilize ‘arc lights’ to diagnose eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, and retinoblastoma (eye cancer) at an early stage, preserving eyesight and saving lives. In partnership with the Kirby Institute at the University of NSW, we implement a World Health Organization best practice procedure for early detection of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and treatment of cervical cancer.
Portable equipment allows us to provide results within one hour, enabling immediate examination and treatment if necessary. Additionally, we collaborate with leading oncologists in Australia and PNG to develop an effective cancer treatment pathway for remote communities, ensuring timely pathology and treatment options.
