At Mustard Seed Global, our unwavering mission is to ignite profound transformation in communities in need, particularly in Papua New Guinea (PNG), where access to essential healthcare and community development remains a formidable challenge. Despite PNG’s abundant resources and economic growth, it grapples with significant obstacles: illiteracy, law and order concerns, high school dropout rates leading to youth unemployment, corruption, and an under-resourced health system.
Enter our groundbreaking initiative, Bush Angels. Since 2016, our mobile medical teams have been on a relentless journey, armed with purpose-equipped Toyota Landcruiser Ambulances and Yamaha ‘banana boats.’ They traverse rugged terrains and walk for hours to deliver life-saving health services to those in remote areas. Because we believe that everyone, no matter where they are, deserves access to quality healthcare. One pressing issue we confront head-on in PNG is early cancer diagnosis. Many cancer cases go undetected until it’s too late for effective treatment due to lack of awareness and limited diagnostic services.
Mustard Seed Global’s Bush Angels paramedic units are equipped with state-of-the-art tools and trained in international best practices, specializing in early cancer diagnosis. By identifying and treating cancers in their early stages, we’re on a mission to save lives and enhance healthcare outcomes.
But our impact doesn’t stop there. We’re committed to creating lasting change through our Social Enterprise Benevolence Hub, in partnership with the East New Britain Provincial Government. Specifically, this hub is located in Kokopo, East New Britain, and includes a bakery, coffeehouse, and express supermarket. These aren’t just places for quality products; they’re spaces for corporate meetings and training sessions for our paramedic teams. By empowering these teams, we address multiple layers of community development.
According to a Lancet report on declining health services in PNG 50% of the medical aid posts serving rural areas at independence in 1995 closed by 2006. Now only a small percentage operate effectively.
Many in PNG travel for up to 4 days for medical services. Fear stops many from going to be tested for HIV-AIDS or cancer. Our rugged 4x4 vehicles and agile boats bring free essential services and early diagnosis screening to their doorsteps.
By helping to fill the gap in early cancer diagnosis people can present earlier to services treating the disease and have a better chance of survival.
